Read: mbo-english.proboards.com/thread/189/boats-faq for common boat questions regarding navigating your boat ETC
This guide will go into detail on the sub mechanics of sailing, as well as a few tips I picked up from other players.
Sailing is a fun activity that can eventually unlock gold rune fragments, and is a good way to unlock gold runes without spending that much.

Merchants - Where you go for sea trading
Reset Stamina - NPC to reset stamina to 0 for 500 Boat money
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Sea trading
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sea trading is a way to earn more Boat money
To start, navigate to the merchants on an island
Search for this guy (The NPC might vary on different islands, but the character on his head stays the same)
Upon talking to him, you will enter the buy/sell interface:
1st tab - Buy
Every Trade Goods has a certain cost and an amount left in the island warehouse.
Basically, if amount is 0, you cannot buy the Trade Goods.
(Over here, it means I am unable to buy the last one since there's nothing left in the island warehouse)
You need to have a boat in order to buy Trade goods. (Either Rental or Built)
Be very careful about Rental boats - Once they expire, the Trade Goods along with them vanish too.
Follow the green numbers to complete buying of goods:
1. Right click on any Trade Goods to "Order" them. At this point you have not completed the buy yet.
This should fill up as much as you can depending on your Cargo Load, and the number stored in the island warehouse.
You can also Left click and select a certain amount.
2. Check your Ordered Goods. Right click on them to remove.
3. Check the costs. The window directly beside this green number shows the final cost (with tax factored in)
4. Click to confirm buy.
You can still buy goods if there isn't any stock in the island warehouse. However to do so, you will need certain tickets:
Enables you to buy 3 star goods if they are out of stock. Obtainable from dailies, or cash shop.
Enables you to buy 4, 5 star goods if they are out of stock. Obtainable from defeating pirates (big and above), cash shop (RNG box), or AH.
2nd tab - Sell
Sell is the almost the same as buy, but there are a lot more things to take note:
Following the green numbers again:
1. Check the sell price. If the sell price is too low, most often you would not want to sell your Trade goods, and move to another island.
How do you know you made a profit?
Hover over the Trade goods in question:
As you can see, I bought this Trade Goods at 287 a piece.
However, I'm only selling this at 140 a piece.
I made a loss of -147 per piece. This means I should move to another island and sell!
Selling Trade goods on the same island you bought them will ALWAYS result in a loss.
You will always get a 50% price when selling to port.
The % shows the deviation from the main price of the Trade goods. Meaning if it's 150%, the island is buying / selling that Trade goods at 150% of it's original price.
I would say the % is best used as a gauge - Often hovering over and looking at the details is more accurate.
If sell price is okay, right click them. At this point, you have not completed the trade.
Quick sell button will add all your cargo to be sold.
2. Check Goods to sell as usual. Right click any you don't want to remove them.
3. Check Sell total
4. Click on confirm and it should pop up another window (summary of sold goods):
Take note to check your profits and your weekly limit! If your profit exceeds your weekly limit, you will not gain any Boat money from this trade.
You can also press 'Y', click on 财富 and hover over 宋钱 (Boat Money) to see your weekly limit. It is the 2nd line in the red box.
Limits will reset every monday 0:00, CN time.
Popular goods
At the place you reset stamina, you can see some customer NPCs (Boxed out in Red):
Talking to them will bring up another UI:
The option allows you to treat customers to a drink.
This will always cost 300 boat money.
Sometimes, customers will give you info on what goods are popular (Might take a few tries)
Look for the 2 boxed out chinese characters: 流行
The green boxed out ones are as follows:
1. Island with the Popular goods
2. The Popular Goods in question
Basically, what you want is to search through and buy the Popular Goods mentioned in 2, then go the the island mentioned in 1.
Trading popular goods will give very huge profits:
Moreover, if the Popular Goods is 4 star or 5 star, you will get a box.
This box gives the following rewards at 1/3 chance (33%): Gold rune fragment, Universal purple pages, Gold book upgrade pages
Even if your trade limit is capped, you should always try to trade 4 star / 5 star Popular goods!
Sales
There might be a slight variation when you treat customers to a drink:
This means that the goods are having a sales / price drop.
Look out for the two boxed out characters in red: 暴跌
The green boxed out characters are as follows:
1. The island having the sales
2. The trade goods that is on sale
Basically you want to go to the island mentioned in 1, then buy the goods in 2.
Sales will always allow you to buy the goods at 50% of its price.
Trading goods that are on sale just raises your profits due to it's low cost, it does not provide any other benefits.

Popular trade routes (Includes all islands):
*天火岛,天泪岛,天冕岛 are not accessible yet. The islands are not released.
You will need pirate boat blueprints to access them. (TLDR: Blueprints released, islands not released)
How to use this table:
When a popular good appears, match the good in question with column 2 of the table (Goods)
Travel to the island in column 1 of the table, purchase the popular goods, then go to the island in column 4 of the table.
The important trades to look out for is the Red colour ones (4/5*) which will give boxes.
Popular goods usually last for 90 mins. As such, you should always set off as soon as you discover goods being popular.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Island investment and unlocking more goods
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
You might notice you are unable to buy some goods.
Island investment will allow you to unlock them, as well as a free stat pill when you reach a certain amount.
Open up the map, and click on any island.
Next, find this on the bottom right of the map:
This will open up the island details.
1. Island level, Consultant
Island level is typically increased by making trades in that island, or by investing in it.
The top donor for the island becomes the island consultant, which has some special perks
(Such as having 15% of the island warehouse reserved for him/her, and friends with 1000 friendship points will incur no tax when trading on that island)
2. Investments to date
This shows how much investments you have made to date.
3. You can hover over any Trade goods to see the unlock condition for it.
Typically, most of these requirements are Island level, and Island investments.
4. Investment button
Upon clicking this, you will see this interface:
Change the amount you want by typing in the specified space, then click on invest.
Investing will fill up the yellow bar at the bottom. Once that is filled, you can click on the chest to get a bonus stat pill.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Private island building
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Getting there
To get to your private island, press 1 to open up your navigation tab
Press 2 to go to your private island.
Note your Boat money and Logs. These will be used to build Island buildings.
Important: You cannot go to your private island when you are at any other island. This includes: Guild island, the Islands you go to for trades, and the Private island of other players.
Private island map translated
1. Trees
Trees are marked with a leaf icon on your map. You can chop different trees depending on the level of your sawmill and villa.
Unavailable trees will be greyed out, available ones will be green.
Chopping trees will give you a certain amount of logs, and island construction points. More on island construction points later.
You can chop trees 20 times per week. Take note: These trees will regenerate very slowly.
2. Workshop
Building this will allow you to craft advanced ship parts (T3 and above).
3. Docks
Building this will allow you to craft ship parts up to T2. Maxed level dock is also a requirement for T3+ ship parts.
4. Wishing Tree
You can plant a private island specific wishing tree here.
The tree looks like this:
Planting this tree will give a large amount of Boat money depending on the quality of the tree. The tree can only take 10 wishes, and you can only plant once per week.
This wishing tree is obtainable from sea content achievements, or by fighting pirates.
5. Guest House
Building this allows you to invite more people to your private island
6. Lighthouse
Building this allows you to own a 2nd boat.
7. Farm house
Building this opens up plots in the planting area, which allows you to plant trees.
8. Planting area
The planting area has 5 slots. This corresponds to the level of your farm house (I.e, at level 2 you have 2 farm slots)
The trees you can plant are in the last tab of the sailing shop:
These trees will give Logs for building your island buildings.
Taking care of these trees will also give help points. If you take care of them regularly, the trees will be a higher quality and give more harvests.
9. Sawmill
As mentioned, building this will allow you to cut more trees on your island.
10. Villa
Building this will unlock more buildings, and allow you to cut more trees on your island.
11. Statue
Building this will give a cool looking personalized statue of your character. Other visitors can view this statue when they visit your island.
12. Garden
Building this will give you a garden that you can customize with different plants or lights.
These garden decors can be found on the last tab of the sailing shop:
These buildings serve no functional purpose - However they add to the Island construction points.
Island NPCs
Some island info about your trees / Construction pts will be shown at the right of your screen. Refer to the translation below.
There are a total of 4 important island NPCs:
I will explain the Upgrade buildings NPC in the next section.
1. Sailing guy
Should be pretty straight forward. Note that the island he takes you to is different from the ones you go to at 东越 (TX map/DY) or 杭州 (HZ)
The 2nd option is to rent a boat.
2. Visitor settings
This is where you can set permissions on who can visit your island.
Given the permission, others can right click your name, and click on 拜访海岛 to visit your island.
3. Planting guy
Nothing special but worth a mention. Shovel is used to relocate / remove already planted trees.
Building & upgrading buildings
In order to build any island buildings, you first have to clear the foundation.
Search for a location on your island with a hammer:
This means that no buildings can be built until the foundation at that location is cleared.
Moving near to a foundation and mousing over it will show you the requirements, as well as the cost.
Go near the foundation, press F to confirm the clearing. Afterwards, wait for the time taken (usually 1 min for clearing foundation) and you should get a pop up saying that it has been cleared.
Remember the Upgrade buildings NPC?
Talk to her, and this UI should appear
Weekly bonus is basically some extra boat money you can get, for achieving a certain amount of Island construction points per week.
You can get the maximum reward if you hit 6000 island construction points per week. Here are the levels for reference:
The other 3 dialogue options will open up a UI to show you which buildings can be built / upgraded.
Note the Chinese characters, they may be useful in identifying the buildings:
(From left to right)
1. Villa, Guesthouse, Statue, Garden
2. Docks, Lighthouse, Workshop
3. Farm house, Sawmill
Clicking on 1, 2, or 3 will open a submenu where you can select the specific building to be built/upgraded.
Only buildings with their foundation cleared will show up in this menu; If you don't see an option here, you need to move to that building spot and clear the foundation first.
After this, a popup window should appear listing down the requirements, and asking you to confirm.
Press the bottom button to confirm the build/upgrade.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4. Ship building / upgrading
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Go to any port (HZ / DY port) and talk to the sailor guy
Click the option boxed out in red and it should bring you to a Ship building UI.
1. Ship stats
Displays ship stats, assuming you have a ship.
Name (改名 - Name change)
最高速度 Highest speed: X m/s
重量 Weight: X kg
食物 Food: X/X
弹药 Ammo: X/X
名声 Fame: Title (Number)
护甲 Armor: X
耐久 HP of Ship: X/X
最大装载人数 Biggest amount of people on the ship: X
维修 - Repair button
The thing to take note here is highest speed, as well as your food and ammo.
You can also choose to repair your ship here if HP is low.
Unless you have your own ship, you won't be able to name change.
You can change the name once every 24 hours.
2. Ship building / upgrading
This window allows you to build the ship / upgrade it.
I will explain these tabs in order.
1st tab - 改造
1st sub tab: Change parts
Simply put, this is the storage of all your available parts.
Click on a part to equip or unequip.
A blue icon appearing on the corner means you equipped that ship part on your ship.
2nd subtab:
This tab is storage for cannons. Equipping is slightly different.
Either click, or drag the part to an empty slot (Green arrow)
For example, you want to do this if you want say, all your T3 cannons on one side.
The four slots boxed out in red might be locked. This is unlocked through the ship questline.
Note that you cannot equip parts or cannons on a rental boat!
2nd tab - 制造
This is the tab that allows you to build ship parts or ships.
1st sub tab: Parts building
This is where you can select ship parts (I.E: Cannon, Deck, Wheel, Bow, Sail) to build.
The materials that are required will be shown under 所需材料.
Parts building flow:
1. Click on any ship part you want to build. Make sure it's highlighted.
Check the materials needed - If you have the materials you won't be seeing anything red.
2. Check this box if you want to use unbound materials only.
3. Click this to proceed with building
A confirmation window will pop up.
Click the left button to confirm, right to cancel.
A success message should display if you click confirm.
The left button puts it into backpack in case you want to trade to other people, or use it at another time.
The right button puts it directly into the docks, so you can equip it right away.
Table of materials for reference:
Note that certain ship parts will require docks to be leveled, as well as workshop.
2nd sub tab: Boat building
Boat building pretty much follows the same flow as parts building.
3. Existing ships
These are all the ships that you have.
More slots will be unlocked by building the lighthouse.
4. Existing resources & 5. Exit button
You can quickly check the amount of Boat money and Logs you have.
Once everything is done, you can click 5. to exit the interface.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
5. NPC Pirate battles
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NPC Pirate battle is one of the most fun parts of sailing content.
Hunting pirates will give you wood, and recipes for pirate parts.
These recipes can be bound or unbound. Unbound recipes are worth a lot on the AH!
Important info to take note of:
Terminology:
舵手 (Helmsman) - Usually referred to the one that is sailing the ship
炮手 (Gunner) - Usually referred to as the ones who man the cannon
海盗 - Pirates. There are different grades of pirates, with different requirements:
斥候海盗船 - Normal pirates. Usually people don't farm this and use this to complete the quest. You do not need to use ammo to kill this type of ship.
小型海盗船 - Small pirates.
Recommended Sailing lv: 12. Recommended Boat setup: At least all T1, with cannons being at least T2 or T3.
These pirates are usually easy to defeat, and you do not need to use much repair tools to fight them.
中型海盗船 - Medium pirates.
Recommended Sailing lv: 16. Recommended Boat setup: At least Wheel / Sail to be at T2, with cannons at T3.
These pirates do more damage, and you might need to use repair tools.
巨型海盗船 - Giant pirates.
Recommended Sailing lv: 22. Recommended Boat setup: At least full T3, with cannons preferably at T4.
It is recommended anyone fighting these pirates have a lot of experience with manning cannons or sailing.
This is as even a fully upgraded ship can die within 40 - 50 hits of this pirate ship.
Test bullets deal almost no damage to this type of pirates.
Before sailing for NPC pirate battles:
1. Always reset your stamina. Your stamina determines how long you can fight after all.
2. Always repair your boats, and restock them to full (Both food and ammo).
If you are just hunting normal pirates, you do not need ammo.
3. Make sure to at least have as many people as the number of cannons you have on your ship.
If you have 3 cannons on one side, at least 3 people, excluding you (as you will be sailing) need to man the cannons.
4. If you cannot afford it, rearrange your cannons such that you have strong ones on one side of the ship.
This helps focus firepower and you will be usually only firing from one side of the ship.
5. The importance of sailing lv: Your cannon damage goes up as your sailing lv goes up. At sailing lv 16, you can unlock ship repair tools in the boat money shop.
You can also get boat repair tools from the AH. Lv 16 is an important milestone as it allows you to get repair tools with boat money, instead of buying them off AH.
6. If you are the captain, it is best you have all your sailing quests unlocked when hunting the higher tier of pirates.
This is as you will be sailing through fog - Unless you finished all your sailing quests, you will be forced to return to an island.
Pirate map:
Orange - Small Pirates
Red - Medium pirates
Purple - Giant pirates
Blue - Avoid, just a foggy area
All these information is based off www.youxidudu.com/gonglve/20170718/117413.html
What can drop from the various pirates:
Small Pirate:
Public Drops - T1 Deck, T2 Cannon (Common), T3 cannon (Rare), T2 sail (Rare) T2 deck (Rare) T1 Bow (Rare)
Personal Drops - Box containing 50 Logs, 2 Star, 3 star trade goods ticket
Medium Pirate:
Public Drops - T1 Deck, T3 Cannon (Common) T2 Sail (Rare) T2 Deck (Rare) T1 Bow (Rare)
Personal Drops - Box containing 100 Logs, 2 star, 3 star, special trade goods ticket, personal island wishing tree (rare)
Giant Pirate:
Public drops - T3 Cannon (Common) T2 Sail, T3 Sail, T2 Deck, T2 Bow, Pirate ship recipes (T4 cannon, T3 Deck, T3 Wheel, T3 Bow, T4 Sail)
Personal drops - Boat Repair tools, 3 star, special trade goods ticket, T4 Cannon recipe, Personal island wishing tree (Rare)
This information might be a bit outdated, as I'm a little unsure on the newer recipes (The T4 cannons etc) but it should give you an idea of what you can get.
Before going out to sea, make sure to repair and restock!
Click on the repair button to repair (In some cases, you might have to wait an amount of time)
and the restock button to restock.
Remember to make sure your stamina is reset to 0/100.
Upon going up out to sea, one person should take care of sailing the ship.
Press "F" near the wheel to drive the ship.
Note that t's possible for anyone in the party to drive it, regardless of whose ship it is!
Sailing controls:
W S - Increase or decrease speed
Your maximum speed depends on various ship parts.
A D - Turn the wheel left and right in order to steer.
How smooth you turn is determined by your ship's wheel.
This is the sailing UI, translated for convenience:
The blue arrow is for perspective change to a zoomed out ship mode:
Here are the things to take note in the UI:
Firstly, the return to island button. This button will return you to the last island visited, but it will have the same effect of getting disconnected (and thus losing food etc)
Use with caution.
Secondly, all players should take note of 1. Ship speed, and 2. Wind direction
1. Ship speed is split into 6 thresholds, represented by the small rectangles
You will need to moderate this, as this will affect your cannon shots a little
2. Wind direction - This is important. If you cannot read chinese directions, follow the arrow - The number below represents the strength of the wind.
This will affect your shots, and you should take this into account before firing.
When you walk near a cannon, press F to man that cannon:
Cannon controls:
Scroll wheel - Zoom in / Zoom out
Left Click - Fire (After you fire, there's a red circle that indicates cooldown time)
J - Change from test bullets to live bullets, or from live bullets to test bullets
This is what you will see when you are in battle with a pirate:
As the picture, try to aim at the "deck" level of the pirate ship. Hitting the cabin results in more damage.
There are many things that affects a cannon shot. Here are the things to look out for:
1. Wind direction
2. Weather - Boat may rock and this may affect your shots during heavy rain etc
3. Boat movement - When the boat is turning, you can stop shooting for a little bit. Your shots might be very inaccurate if you try to fire while the boat is turning.
There will be some times when your boat is perpendicular to the pirate ship like so:
This is the best time to fire at a ship.
To avoid damage, these are the tactics a sailor can use (from what I observed):
1. Moving around in circles.
If the pirate ship is not parallel to you, and you move in circles around the pirate ship, there's a chance the pirate ship will just be turning and not firing.
2. Avoid having your ship parallel to an enemy ship if possible. Although you can land shots easily, you will take a lot of damage too!
3. If your ship is parallel, you can either - try to boost your speed so that you go ahead of the pirate ship, and can create a perpendicular angle to it, or run away to another spot.
4. If you really must fire while your ship is parallel, make sure that your ships are not adjacent (I.e, try to have the pirate ship in front of your ship)
When you finally defeat a pirate, they will drop a box like so:
Move your ship near it, and click on it to get the loot. Remember to click 2 times as there's public loot (usually up for allocation by the leader) and personal loot.
When your ship becomes damaged, it might catch fire:
Take careful note of the icon boxed out. Fires can be big or small - If a small fire isn't put out, it will turn into a big fire.
Allocate one person to take care of the fires!
To put out a fire, go near it and press your action key (F).
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
6. 40v40 sea battles
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
40v40 (8 ships, with 5 players on each ship) is a new sea battle that you can enter every week
Refer to here: mbo-english.proboards.com/thread/426/weekly-40v40-naval-battle
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
7. Influence & Sailing shop (势力)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Doing dailies and leveling your sailing level is very important as it helps unlock things in the sailing shop.
Firstly, doing some dailies will build up influence between the 3 alliances
To open up your influence page, check this button at the bottom right of your screen:
It should open up another window like so
This is your influence among the 3 alliances. Mouse over the bar for details.
In order to earn Influence, you need to do your dailies. It can also be obtained from various quests.
Search for a tag indicating the influence you will earn on that quest:
海政司 - Gold tag
四海联盟 - Brown tag
绝智轩 - Silver tag
In order of importance, these are the ones you want to prioritize:
四海联盟 - 海政司 - 绝智轩
The first alliance is important as it unlocks the gold rune fragments exchange
The 2nd alliance is important as it unlocks exchange materials for shiny enhance (pvp gear)
The 3rd alliance is not as important, as it unlocks books that you can study.
Usually you won't be needing these books if you don't have access to a house.
The sailing shop:
To access the sailing shop, press Y.
Next, follow the screenshots to open the sailing shop:
1st tab of sailing shop - depends on 海政司
Important things to take note of:
Materials for shiny enhance (pvp gear)
Last item gives a random equip with random liners.
2nd tab of sailing shop - depends on 四海联盟
Important things to take note of:
Gold rune fragments. Make sure to max this out per week if possible. 25 or more frags = 1 rune.
Should you need them, gold book break pages, purple book pages, and upgrade stones, as well as a type of gold rune.
3rd tab of sailing shop - depends on 绝智轩
Important things to take note of:
Books for studying at a house, and some costumes
4th and 5th tab of sailing shop - depends on sailing lv
Important things to take note of:
4th tab - Basic ship recipes, and repair tools at sailing lv 16. Alternatively you can get repair tools from AH.
5th tab - Plants to plant on your private island, as well as decorations for garden.

X.FAQ
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. What happens if I disconnect/log out/go back to character screen during sailing?
You will lose 80% of your goods as well as 50% supplies (food / ammo).
2. What happens if my boat gets blown up by pirates or other players?
You will lose ALL of your goods and supplies. These can be picked up by other players.
3. What happens if I run out of stamina during sailing?
You will be unable to move your boat, and be stuck at sea. You can only move if other ships push you.
The only way to exit is either to log out or go back to character screen.
You will lose 80% of your goods as well as 50% supplies. These can be picked up by other players.
4. How do I join world groups?
Look at your world chat tab. Using the terms, you can try to ask if anyone is going to pirates etc, or need pt members
eg, you can ask if anyone is going giant pirates - 有人打巨型海盗吗?
有人 - Is someone
打 - fighting
<Insert whatever you want to fight)
吗?- converts the whole thing into a question
Sometimes they will recruit too - 巨型海盗 Q1 炮手 (Q1 for giant pirates, need gunman)
When in doubt, just ask around on discord. Some people do have their own ship and go to fight pirates, or pvp etc
Will add any queries about this guide here.
